3,669 WHP Fox Mustang | Peter Volpe, Limited Drag Radial

March 15, 2021

There is no doubt the Fox Mustang is one of the most iconic vehicles in outlaw and street-legal drag racing from its favorable suspension configuration to its natural lightweight. Originally built by Racecraft, Peter Volpe now owns the legendary Mustang featured in this video and it has a full slate of Limited Drag Radial action on tap in 2021.

Looking into the iconic Mustang’s past, this car is one of the original Radial vs. the World entries and it is credited with the first 5-second run in the ¼-mile on a set of Mickey Thompson 315 drag radials. The Fox was also the first to eclipse the 3-second barrier on a pair of 275 drag radial tires. It also has the NMCA Radial Wars national championship attached to its pedigree. Today, it sits in similar trim and continues to be powered by the reliable Pro Line Racing 481X Stage IV billet engine. Volpe recently had the setup reconfigured for Limited Drag Radial, which requires a maximum of two 88mm turbochargers, down from the 102mm twin turbos it previously utilized. FuelTech bolted the Mustang to its in-house Mainline Hub Dyno to get the new combination sorted out before they put the car on track.

FT Injectors

As the dyno slowed down, the computer revealed 3,669 WHP and what makes this combination special is the use of FuelTech’s newest product line, the FT Injector. Boasting two size, the FT Injectors are offered in 520 lb/hr and 720 lb/hr configurations—both ratings are measured at 90 psi of base fuel pressure. The fuel injectors can run as low as 30 psi of base fuel pressure, which adjusts the flow rating to 301 lb/hr and 422 lb/hr, respectively. Pushing the fuel pressure to 130 psi changes the flow rates to 614 lb/hr and 860 lb/hr. The FT Injectors are compatible with any fuel, are low impedance design which requires the use of the 8A/2A injector driver, operating voltage range is 12V to 24V, and have a 1.5 Ohm coil resistance.

The rest of the car features a complete line of FuelTech products, as expected, with the FT600 engine management system being the main focus. The FT600 and the other PowerFT ECUsFT550, FT550LITE, and FT450—are all-inclusive systems that offer sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data logger, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, and so much more. As you will see in the video, the FT600, FT550, and FT450 have a customizable digital display for the driver and the anti-glare TFT touchscreen offers the ability to make adjustments without hooking up a PC computer. Naturally, this iconic Fox Mustang also runs an assortment of FuelTech ignition components from the FTSPARK to its CDI Racing coils, which was all installed by RK Racecraft/Homier Fabrications.

From modernizing an iconic and barrier breaking Fox Mustang to powering grassroots motorsports, continued product development combined with incredible technology is why you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere
