FuelTech the Brains for Stryten Energy’s Reluctance Jeep: A Hybrid Electric-Diesel

November 13, 2024

Reluctance Jeep Concept Hybrid Electric-Vehicle for Emergency Response and Off-Grid Power

The Reluctance Jeep, a cutting-edge hybrid-electric concept vehicle, was unveiled by Stryten Energy at the 2024 SEMA Show. The hybrid system, built by Bruiser Conversions, ingeniously combines a diesel engine and an electric motor, making use of cutting-edge technology, including two FuelTech FT550 ECUs, which act as the command center for the vehicle’s complex electric-diesel interaction, and Stryten Energy’s lithium batteries. Built to tackle extreme environments and redefine efficiency standards, the Reluctance Jeep represents the next generation of sustainable transportation and portable emergency power.

A Hybrid Approach to Long-Range Power

At the heart of the Reluctance Jeep’s innovation lies its unique powertrain setup. Custom builder Bruiser Conversions paired a 5.9L common rail Cummins diesel engine with the Cascadia iM-425 powertrain, which serves as a generator to recharge the Jeep’s 1000kWh battery pack in just 14 minutes. This battery is complemented by another Cascadia iM-425 motor capable of 550hp, used for propulsion, creating a system that delivers 2,000 foot-pounds of torque, long-range driving with an impressive 70+ miles per gallon on the 12,000lbp vehicle, and extended battery life. Equipped with a 100-gallon tank, this impressive build has a range of 7,000 miles!

FuelTech’s FT550 ECUs bring a high level of integration, managing both Cascadia motors along with the associated inverters, onboard charger (OBC), and DC-DC converter. These ECUs are designed to seamlessly handle the Jeep’s EV torque demands, charging cycles, and cooling requirements, making them indispensable to the vehicle’s functionality.

A Versatile Solution for Power Resilience

One of the most strategic features of the Reluctance Jeep is its capability to operate as a mobile generator, providing power for homes, hospitals, and critical infrastructure during grid outages. With its high-capacity battery and diesel engine working in harmony, this vehicle can sustain vital services in emergencies, adding tremendous value in situations where access to grid power is limited or compromised. To provide context for the vehicle’s mobile power capabilities, the Reluctance’s batteries can power the average home for roughly 3 days on a single charge.

FuelTech FT550 ECUs: The Brain of the Operation

Central to the Reluctance Jeep’s innovation are the dual FuelTech FT550 ECUs, which manage both the diesel and electric components. Their precision in controlling the hybrid powertrain’s operations ensures that the Reluctance Jeep delivers reliable performance, both on the road and as a stationary power source. By integrating features such as charging control, torque distribution, and thermal management, FuelTech’s ECUs make the hybrid system exceptionally efficient and reliable, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in electric-diesel hybrids.

A Future-Ready Vehicle Built for Demanding Situations

The Stryten Energy Reluctance Jeep, powered by FuelTech, is more than just a vehicle; it’s a mobile power unit engineered to support critical operations when traditional power sources fall short. Whether it’s driving long distances with ease or providing emergency power to essential services, the Reluctance Jeep represents a new era of hybrid-electric innovation that’s prepared to meet the demands of an evolving world.

FuelTech’s involvement underscores the company’s commitment to pioneering hybrid-electric solutions. This collaboration with Bruiser Conversion and Stryten Energy highlights FuelTech’s expertise in integrating high-performance ECUs with advanced powertrain systems, setting new standards for efficiency, reliability, and versatility. The Reluctance Jeep is a testament to the power of innovation and the pivotal role FuelTech plays in the future of hybrid-electric technology.
